A fine looking vintage wood carved ZITAN box. The box is made by an old Hong Kong carpenter about 30 years ago. The corners are inlaid with patong, so are the handles and hinges. There are visible cracks loss of polish which could be restored.
Zitan was also used as a decorative wood and as the framework of tables and chairs in which burl was used as the surface wood. It takes a very long time for a tree to grow to a diameter of a foot and most of the large trees were cut down prior to and in the eighteenth century.
